The Music Therapy program is one of the oldest (1969) and foremost training programs in this country. It features closely supervised clinical work each semester, which takes place at local facilities as well as schools, nursing homes and hospitals in New York City. In addition, the program offers a Music Therapy Training Group, Introduction to Guided Imagery and Music, an on-campus music therapy clinic, and specialized courses in piano accompaniment and clinical improvisation. Guest clinicians from the U.S. and other countries frequently make presentations and give workshops.

In addition to the Bachelor of Arts degree, successful completion of this degree allows the recipient to sit for the examination to become a Board-Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC).

Course Descriptions:

BIOL110: The Biology of Human Life (3 hours lecture, 2 hours lab)

The course is intended to serve the non-biology major and present a basic introduction to human anatomy and physiology. It will provide students with a laboratory experience so that they may learn the scientific method and its application in the field of human biology. This course will provide these students with a body of knowledge specific to human anatomy and physiology so that they may be well informed when dealing with important personal, family and societal issues relative to health and life-style decisions. Meets Gen Ed 2002 - Natural/Physical Science Laboratory. 4 sh.

MATH109: Statistics (3 hours lecture)

Introduction to the use of statistics in the real world. Topics include: analysis and presentation of data, variability and uncertainty in data, techniques of statistical inference and decision-making. Computer assisted including lecture, individual and small group tutoring in Mathematics Computer Laboratory. Meets Gen Ed 2002 - Mathematics. 3 sh.

This course explores the diverse nature of the musical experience by examining various traditions from Africa, Asia, South America, Europe and North America. The study of different musical traditions develops our listening skills and allows us to consider the role of performer and their audience in multiple frameworks, including ritual, political and the world of entertainment. 3 sh.

Research method and music bibliography. Styles, genres and shaping forces of Western music from the rise of polyphony in the Middle Ages through the music of Haydn and Mozart. MUTC101: Music and Computer Technology I (3 hours lecture)

This course develops an understanding of the influence of technology upon society in general, and, more particularly, upon the musical culture and aesthetics of the twentieth century; develops a critical understanding of concepts such as interactivity in technology, the internet as a global village, virtual reality, technology and freedom of expression, among others; demonstrates the relevance and importance of music technology throughout the various disciplines in music; develops comfort with basic computer skills; develops individual and collective problem solving skills involving technology in a variety of computing environments; develops basic understanding of data structures of computers and networking; and provides an understanding of varous hardware and software technologies, with a particular emphasis on hardware and software components involved with music instruction and production such as instructional software for musicians, data structures for digital audio and MIDI, music notation software, input devices for music notation, music sequencing, and desktop publishing for musicians. 3 sh.

Observing, measuring, and recording behavior in a music therapy setting and other aspects of planning for music therapy sessions as well as observing music therapy sessions. 2 sh.

Ways in which music and the therapist may be used to influence the behavior of children, the mentally retarded, and the physically disabled. 3 sh.

Ways in which music therapy may be used in working with adult psychiatric patients, addictions, offenders, and geriatrics. Setting up a music therapy program. 3 sh.

MUTH463: Psychological Foundations of Music I (3 hours lecture)

Emotional correlates of the musical experience explored through research findings, psychological testing and inquiry, and philosophy. Current theories applied to practice in music therapy, education and performance are discussed. 3 sh.

MUTH464: Psychological Foundations of Music II (3 hours lecture)

Basic techniques of conducting, reading, and interpreting psychological research in music are reviewed. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies are emphasized. Implications for various aspects of music are discussed. 3 sh.

Six months clinical training as a music therapy intern in an approved training program. 1 sh.

PSYC101: Introduction to Psychology (3 hours lecture)

This course is an introduction to the study of human behavior and surveys major topics within the diverse discipline of psychology. Topics covered will come from each of four core areas offered by the psychology department: Social/Applied (e.g., Social, Industrial-Organizational, Health), Biological Basis of Behavior (e.g., Physiology, Perception, Motivation/Emotion, Comparative Animal Behavior), Cognition (e.g., Learning and Memory, Conditioning and Learning, Cognition, Language) and Personality (e.g., Personality, Abnormal, Development). PSYC201: Child Psychology (3 hours lecture)

Covers growth, development and behavior of children. Physical, intellectual, social and emotional development and their interaction. Scientific method exemplified through the literature and intensive study of individual children. 3 sh.

Prerequisites: PSYC 101.

PSYC235: Psychology of Exceptional Children and Youth (3 hours lecture)

Surveys, current practices and problems of exceptional children and youth. Explores the unique needs of individuals with handicaps that involve intellectual, sensory, motor, neurological, social and emotional origins. Utilizes analysis of case materials for theoretical and practical applications to the psychology of exceptionality. 3 sh.

PSYC365: Abnormal Psychology (3 hours lecture)

Topics include an overview of psychopathological processes: neuroses, psychoses, and characterological disorders; feeling, thinking and behavioral aspects during the life span; diagnostic and treatment procedures. 3 sh.
