The Speech Language Specialist program in the Department of
Communication Sciences and Disorders provides instruction for professionals who
wish to fulfill the academic requirements for New Jersey State certification as
a public school Speech Language Specialist. Candidates for certification must take the
courses listed below at Montclair State University or provide official
transcripts, including those from other colleges; to document that equivalent
courses have been completed. This
program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and
Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech Language Hearing Association
and the Council for Exceptional Children.
ADMISSIONS
Students seeking certification as a Speech Language Specialist must have a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Students may complete the requirements for the certification program in conjunction with the Master's program in Communication Sciences Disorders. Students who wish to apply to Montclair State University must complete the graduate application and submit official transcripts from each college or university attended, along with a brief statement of professional objectives.
SPEECH-LANGUAGE SPECIALIST
Complete the following 4 courses for 12 semester hours:
Course Descriptions:
CSND573: Organization and Admin of Speech and Hearing Programs. Starting Spring 2011: Organization and Administration of Speech and Language Programs in Schools
Clinical programs in the public schools and other settings. Testing, scheduling, grouping and record-keeping. The role of the clinician in relation to administrators, teachers, specialists in related areas, parents and paraprofessionals. Starting Spring 2011: This course is designed to provide students with an overview of clinical programs in the public schools. Testing, scheduling, grouping, service delivery models, intervention and record keeping will be discussed within the perspective of clinical application. The role of the speech language pathologist in relation to administrators, teacher specialists in related areas, parents and paraprofessionals will be reviewed. Hands-on experience will also be part of the course. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: Graduate major in Communication Sciences and Disorders, Speech-Language Pathology concentration; and CSND 521. Starting Spring 2011: Graduate major in Communication Sciences and Disorders, Speech-Language Pathology concentration; and CSND 587.
CSND587: Language Disorders in School Age Children
The class considers the acquisition of language and its impairments in school aged children and the impact of language impairment on literacy, academic performance, and social interaction. Assessment and treatment approaches are discussed within an evidence-based practice perspective. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: CSND 583.
CSND603: School Externship in Speech-Language Pathology
This course is designed to provide the experiences and skills necessary for professional practice as a speech-language pathologist within a school setting. This is a full-time externship experience under the supervision of an ASHA certified speech-language pathology supervisor who holds New Jersey certification to practice in a school setting. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: Grade of B or better in CSND 599.
SPED579: Special Education for Students with Disabilities
An overview of instruction for students with special needs; characteristics of special populations, federal and state legislation, educational implications of disabling conditions, principles for instruction and planning for inclusion are presented; community resources and special issues related to the education of students with disabilities are discussed. 3 sh.
