The Artist's Diploma is a two-year program designed for highly talented and motivated young musicians seeking intensive music study. The program focuses on the practical, performance-based aspects of music, including private instruction, participation in ensembles, and concert experience. Two full recitals are required during the two years of study. There is a shorter one-year program, the Performer's Certificate.

Completion of the programs requires six credits per semester. Due to the intensive amount of weekly practicing and rehearsing involved, students in this program will be considered by the University to be full-time students. The tuition fees will be calculated according to “In-state Graduate” tuition. In generic form, this program contains sixteen hours of principal private study, and eight hours of chamber music and/or large-ensemble participation.

Students must have a baccalaureate degree or equivalent from an accredited institution. Credits from previous study may not be substituted or transferred into the Artist’s Diploma program. The one exception applies to students who have just competed Montclair State's Performer’s Certificate program; they may roll over the twelve credits earned in that certificate towards this more intensive 24-credit program.

MUAP541: Applied Music I

Fifteen one-hour lessons per semester, private instruction. 4 sh.

Prerequisites: John J Cali School of Music approval.

MUAP542: Applied Music II

Fifteen one-hour lessons per semester, private instruction. 4 sh.

Prerequisites: MUAP 541.

MUAP643: Applied Music III

Fifteen one-hour lessons per semester, private instruction. 4 sh.

Prerequisites: MUAP 542.

MUAP644: Applied Music IV (4 hours instruction)

Fifteen one-hour lessons per semester, private instruction. 4 sh.

MUEN510: Ensemble: Orchestra

Rehearsal and performance of orchestral repertoire. May be repeated for credit. Previous course MUPR 537 effective through Spring 2014. 1 sh.

Prerequisites: Music (MUSC) majors or by audition.

MUEN520: Ensemble: Band

Rehearsal and performance of band and wind ensemble literature. May repeat. Previous course MUPR 535 effective through Spring 2014. 1 sh.

Prerequisites: Music (MUSC) majors or by audition.

MUEN530: Ensemble: Opera Workshop (4 hours lecture)

Rehearsal and performance of operatic repertoire in English or English translation. Admission by audition only. Auditions held in the semester prior to the one in which the workshop is offered. Open to pianists and singers. May repeat for credit. Previous course MUPR 533 effective through Spring 2014. 1 sh.

MUEN550: Chamber Ensemble Performance I

Participation in instrumental or vocal ensembles. Pre-registration may be required. One ensemble per course number. May be repeated for credit. Previous course MUPR 550 effective through Spring 2014. 1 sh.

MUEN561: Harry Partch Ensemble

Learning to play instruments from the Harry Partch instrumentarium and new techniques on standard instruments, voice. Repertoire ensemble. May be repeated for credit. Previous course MUPR 561 effective through Spring 2014. 1 sh.

MUEN580: Chamber Ensemble Performance II

Participation in instrumental or vocal ensemble. Pre-registration may be required. One ensemble per course number. May be repeated for credit. Previous course MUPR 551 effective through Spring 2014. 1 sh.

MUEN590: Chamber Ensemble Performance IV

Participation in vocal or instrumental ensemble. Pre-registration may be required. One ensemble per course number. May be repeated for credit. Previous course MUPR 553 effective through Spring 2014. 1 sh.
