Overview:
The Director of School Counseling Services Certification authorizes the holder to serve as a director, administrator or supervisor of school counseling services, including the supervision of educational activities in areas related to and within the counseling program in grades preschool through 12.
The Director of School Counseling certification program combines the fields of counseling and educational leadership and therefore, includes courses from both fields in the Department of Counseling and Educational Leadership.The program objectives reflect the fact that skills and dispositions from both are needed to be a successful leader of a comprehensive guidance program. Completers of the program will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the meaning and significance of fundamental guidance/counseling concepts, principles and theories.
- Develop and refine a personal philosophy of education and social consciousness committed to social justice and culturally responsive learning and consistent with the goals of the College of Education and Human Services and the guiding principles of the Network for Educational Renewal.
- Develop and refine characteristics required for effective leadership.
- Analyze educational organizations and plan programs and strategies for increasing organizational effectiveness.
- Be skilled in using techniques to facilitate interpersonal and group problem-solving and decision-making.
- Be skilled in managing change and conflict in educational endeavors.
The development and implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program requires a collaborative effort among well-trained, highly competent professional school counselors. The director of school counseling services ensures that highly qualified school counselors are hired, and that professional development, consultation and supervision are provided for all counseling employees. The director also provides leadership for the development and implementation of an effective comprehensive school counseling program. These responsibilities include promoting and coordinating the design, delivery, evaluation and improvement of comprehensive school counseling programs in a systematic manner to improve the academics, attendance and behavior of all students.

DOCUMENTATION OF EXPERIENCE
Provide verification of 3 years of school counselor experience. Must be signed on original school letterhead.
Course Descriptions:
COUN587: Administration and Supervision of Guidance Programs (3 hours lecture)
Developing and administering programs of student registration, theory and techniques of scheduling, and supervisory responsibilities of the director of guidance. Coordinating guidance activities in a multi-school district or agency. Examination of current guidance practices; formation of proposals for improvement in programs where the student is working as a counselor and/or director. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: Certification in School Counselor.
ELAD521: Education Law (3 hours lecture)
This course immerses students in the practice of school law as it relates to legal theory, practical politics, the relationship of a school district's organization to other units of government, the appellate function of the state Commissioner of Education and the state Board of Education, New Jersey school laws (Title 18A of the revised statutes), and rules and regulations of the state Board of Education and their decisions. Students study New Jersey school legal structure and compare it to that of other states, while they work through authentic case studies. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: ELAD 510, Graduate students in Educational Leadership (ELAD), Principal (PRIN), Supervisor (SUPR) or departmental approval.
ELAD540: Differentiated Supervision (3 hours lecture)
In this course, students examine the supervisory roles of school leaders in supporting effective teaching and student learning. They learn about the processes of clinical supervision, coaching, and mentoring, and develop the knowledge and skills to ensure effective instruction through collaboration, observation, analysis, feedback, and evaluation of instruction. All students engage in simulated and authentic supervision of classroom practice through a variety of techniques. 3 sh.

ELAD680: Leading Curriculum Change in Diverse Settings. Starting Summer 2012: Leading Curriculum Change for Student Achievement (3 hours lecture)
This course will help students make the transition from thinking of curriculum for a particular subject within a classroom setting to thinking of the philosophical frameworks that help shape curriculum and the curricular approaches and professional learning for school staff that will increase student achievement. Students will develop an understanding of the nature of the presented curriculum and learn how to effectively restructure that curriculum and create professional learning opportunities in response to staff and student emerging needs. 3 sh.
Prerequisites: ELAD 635; Graduate students in Educational Leadership (ELAD), Principal (PRIN), Supervisor (SUPR) or departmental approval.
