The Montclair State University Police Department is currently seeking motivated and civic minded students to be employed part-time as Campus Crossing Guards. This program enhances the safety of pedestrians and allows for a more fluid flow of traffic on certain campus roadways.
About the Position
The duties are as follows:
- Direct or escort pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic as necessary.
- Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at such places determined by the Chief of Police.
- Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults.
- Direct traffic movement or warn of hazards, using signs, flags, lanterns and hand signals.
- Up to 20 hours per week.
Position pays $14.00 per hour.
Position Requirements
The appointed campus crossing guard must be: sound in body, of good health, of good moral character and has not been convicted of any criminal offense involving moral turpitude. The Crossing Guard will be expected to work during inclement weather. This Crossing Guard position is a non-sworn, civilian position and shall not have any law enforcement powers. The crossing guard shall be under the supervision and direction of the Chief of Police and shall be trained as described by N.J.S.A. 40A:9-154.2.
The training shall consist of two hours of classroom instruction and 20 hours of observation by an experienced crossing guard or a regular police officer. The crossing guard shall be provided with the uniform contemplated by N.J.S.A. 40A:9-154.3. As required by N.J.S.A. 40A:9-154.4 the Chief of Police shall determine where and what times the crossing guard shall be posted. Additionally, the crossing guard shall be a current Montclair State University undergraduate student and maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
