20 Years Later: 9/11 Day of Service
Montclair State students volunteered on and off campus on September 11, marking the 20th anniversary of the attacks. “Many of our students weren’t even alive on that tragic day and many were only a couple of years old,” says Center for Community Engagement Director Bryan Murdock. “This opportunity helps reinforce the tremendous sacrifices of first responders and the importance of public service.”
Red Hawks Help CDC Improve Mask Wearing
Montclair State students collect data to improve mask wearing and fight COVID-19. “The feedback from this study can be used to create proper messaging for the future to promote healthy behaviors,” says MPH student Stefanie LoBue. Read the story.

- The University of Rochester’s alumni magazine reprinted a personal essay by Ellen S. Bakalian, an adjunct professor in Classics and General Humanities, about losing her husband in the 9/11 attacks. It was originally published in The Atlantic magazine in 2019.
- Brigid Harrison (Political Science) is quoted in this Associated Press story about the public matching fund disbursements soaring in New Jersey’s gubernatorial race.
- Francesca Laguardia (Justice Studies) offered commentary in this Spokesman-Review story about the delays in the trial of accused 9/11 plotters. The reporter found Laguardia via organic search, following our publication of a faculty expert piece on the impact of the 9/11 attacks on American life.
Kudos
- Reasons to be proud: Montclair State has been named “Best of the Best” for LGBTQ students by Campus Pride and the top New Jersey school on Study.com’s LGBTQ-Friendly Schools list.
- Valerie Tauriello, a health and physical education teacher and 2004 Montclair State graduate risked her life to stop a runaway SUV before it crashed into a group of schoolchildren at Soehl Middle School in Linden last week, the Star-Ledger reported. School principal Gwendolyn Long said in praise of the teacher, “this is every day with Ms. Tauriello, thinking of our students first.” Watch the video of this heroic action.
