Hispanic Student College Institute Gives High Schoolers a Head Start

With a growing number of Latino students pursuing higher education, Montclair’s Hispanic Student College Institute offers rising high school juniors and seniors a head start on college applications, financial planning and experiencing campus life.

On Their Land, In Their Voices

The Native American and Indigenous Studies program hosted a four week program where students had the opportunity to visit various locations in New Jersey to meet with tribal leaders and learn from them about the reclaiming of their cultures.

Boys Outperform Girls in Giving Accurate Directions, New Study Says

New research from the Psychology Department’s Spatial Development Lab that explores navigational preferences between sexes, could help provide educators with better tools to teach children how to give and understand directions.

University Facilities Launches New Campus Accessibility Map

The new map includes an overview of inter-campus shuttle routes, accessible parking locations across all campus lots, barrier-free pedestrian routes, and accessible building entrances with automatic doors.

Blue Envelope Program

  • University Police announce the Blue Envelope Program to help those with Autism Spectrum Disorder during a traffic stop. The envelope features critical communication guidelines on its exterior, specifically tailored to assist law enforcement officers in recognizing and adapting their approach when interacting with a driver who has autism. For Blue Envelopes and more information visit University Police Headquarters located next to the Red Hawk Deck or the Disability Resource Center, Cole Hall Room 331.

  • Matthew Aardema (Biology) is quoted in this Buzzfeed article about tools to have on hand during tick season.
  • Stephanie Silvera (Public Health) is quoted in this NJ Spotlight News article about rising COVID-19 infections.
  • Katia Paz Goldfarb (Hispanic Initiatives and International Programs) was interviewed by NBC Telemundo for a segment about this year’s Hispanic Student College Institute; the Spanish-language network also participated in a panel during the HSCI program.
  • Eric Weiner (Educational Foundations) wrote a piece for science news blog 3 Quarks Daily about teaching during troubling times and providing “brave spaces” to help students lean into difficult and challenging conflicts.
