What to Expect with Holiday Shopping

Social media trends, and supply chain and inflation concerns will make for another unprecedented holiday shopping experience. Our own consumer and economy experts Manveer Mann, Patrali Chatterjee, Archana Kumar and Luis Portes share predictions and observations about the most wonderful time of the year.

First-Gen Pride

During Montclair’s first official National First-Generation College Celebration Day, Assistant Director of First-Generation Initiatives Jasey Bedoya explains that more than half of our students identify as first-generation. “Being first-gen is all about storytelling.”

Culture, Kinship and Kimchi

A multicultural group of kimchi fans explored the significance and flavor of the Korean diet staple during a lecture and interactive workshop. See how professors Yeon Bai and Yun Kim shared cultural information and tips for making the vegetable dish to faculty, staff and students.

• Jordanna Maziarz (Undergraduate Admissions) is quoted in this Wall Street Journal article about higher ed institutions like Montclair that are offering direct admissions to help remove barriers during the college application process.
• The Center for Strategic Communication’s research showing increased hate speech on Twitter continues to get media traction, including Yahoo! News, the San Francisco Chronicle and CMSWire.
• Emily Hodge (Educational Leadership) is the lead author of a report recently published in professional K-12 education magazine Kappan, that looks at ways to respond to community concerns about critical race theory. The report was also discussed on Fox News and picked up by Yahoo!.
• Patricia Virella (Educational Leadership) wrote a piece for NJ.com about the steps the city of Paterson has taken to create and support a more equitable school district.
• Harold Abraham ’11, ’15 MA (Educational Leadership) is featured in this PIX11 News segment about a program he implemented at Norwood Elementary School (where he is principal) that rewards good deeds and reading. Tokens are awarded to students for committing acts of kindness and can be cashed in at vending machines that dispense books.
• Stephanie Silvera (Public Health) is quoted in this NJ Spotlight News article about the mental health impact of those with long COVID.
• In honor of Veterans Day, The Montclair Girl blog published an interview with student Jaslyn Bridges, who is currently in her last year at Montclair and served as Security Forces staff sergeant (E5) with the United States Air Force for five years.
• Jim Anderson (Financial Aid) is quoted in this U.S. News and World Report article about the Pell Grant.
• Michael Robbins (English) wrote a cover story for Harper’s Magazine about the end of the world, or what he calls today’s “apocalyptic structure of feeling.” The essay combines personal history, Marxist and environmental theory, meditations on popular culture and readings of the Book of Revelation.
