Multimedia Professor Featured on PBS Episode
Multimedia Journalism Professor Thomas E. Franklin, whose iconic 9/11 photo was made into a postage stamp, will be featured on the new PBS series The Bigger Picture on September 6.
Eighteen Newark Red Hawks Rising Teacher Academy high school students spent six weeks this summer on campus, taking courses to help prepare them for college.

- Meiyin Wu (Biology) is quoted in this NJ.com article about the remarkably clean water we’ve had at New Jersey beaches this year.
- Stephanie Silvera (Public Health) is quoted in this NJ.com article about how persons of color did not get the same level of care during the pandemic. Silvera was also quoted in this News12 Connecticut piece on the latest vaccine and masking recommendations as kids head back to school, and offered commentary for a NJ Spotlight News story on how universities are rolling out monkeypox guidance.
- In the debut of his new “Varsity Aces Mailbag” (subscriber-only), The Record high school sports reporter Darren Cooper shared memories of working with the late Mike Scala.

- Kirk Johnson (Justice Studies) is quoted in this New Jersey Monitor article about ethics in the state legislature.

- The Investiture of President Jonathan Koppell will take place on Thursday, September 15. Check your email for information sent out this week from the Provost’s office about the schedule of events.
- You can visit the digital versions of The Universities Galleries’ past exhibitions, viewable on desktop, mobile or as an immersive VR experience on the Galleries website. And check the website for upcoming new shows.
- U.S. research agencies are now mandated by the government to update their public access policies to ensure that research and publications funded by taxpayers are accessible, without embargo or cost. Guidance on providing open access to your publications or research is available at the Sprague Library’s website.

- To Elizabeth Emery (World Languages and Cultures), who was invited to speak at the Maison Louis Pasteur in France this summer during ceremonies celebrating the bicentennial of the French scientist’s birth.
- To Kent Leung (Physics and Astronomy), who was awarded a $436k grant to study neutrons by the U.S. Department of Energy.
- To Erin Kang (Psychology) for receiving the 2022 Society for Research in Child Development Small Grants Program for Early Career Scholars’ Slifka/Ritvo Innovation in Autism Research Award.
- To Seddik Meziani (Finance) for participating in a bell ringing ceremony for new single stock exchange-traded funds at the NASDAQ on August 16. Seddik serves as the chair of the Independent Audit Committee of GraniteShares, the company that launched the new ETFs.
