Montclair State Students Receive Scholarships to Study Abroad

Study Abroad Scholarships administered by the Office of International Engagement have been awarded to students studying abroad for the Summer, Fall and for the Academic Year 2019-2020.
The Montclair-Graz Sister City Scholarship is full academic year scholarship funding tuition, fees, housing and a stipend to study at one of Montclair State’s partner institutions in Graz, Austria. The scholarship is funded through cooperation between Montclair State University and the City of Graz and Overseas Neighbors. It’s awarded every year to two Montclair State students and to two students from Graz to study at Montclair State.
This year the Montclair State recipients of the award are Nichola Phillips and Sabrina Rose Dindino. Phillips is majoring in Linguistics with a concentration in Language Engineering and German. Dindino is a majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in International Business and minoring in German.
The Peter Balsamo Scholarship was awarded to James Dorcely, who is majoring in sociology with a minor in French. Dorcely will be attending Universite Laval in Quebec, Canada. This scholarship is funded by a generous alum for students who are going to study language or heritage abroad.
The Dugan Scholarship was awarded to Ashley Arias, who is majoring in Psychology with a minor in Social Work. Arias will be attending Nebrija University in Madrid, Spain. This scholarship is for students participating in an exchange program.
The Anita Magistro Udell Scholarship for Language Majors was awarded to Erik Helverson, who is majoring in German. Helverson will be attending the University of Graz. This scholarship is awarded to students majoring in a foreign language. This scholarship is generously funded in honor of an alum of Montclair State who studied abroad.
Erasmus Plus Scholarship provides round-trip airfare plus a monthly stipend. It’s funded through a joint grant of the University of Graz, Austria with Montclair State University as a partner.
Mollie Knee, a junior German major with minors in French and Russian, is a recipient of this scholarship. Knee is going to study abroad at the University of Graz for the 2019-2020 academic year.
“I hope to gain more experience and fluency in speaking German,” said Knee. “I also hope to learn more about the culture in Austria as well and experience everything it has to offer.”
The Harold S. Sloan Trust Award is a scholarship for students to participate in an exchange program in social sciences.
Hanadi Vargas, a junior Political Science major with minors in Paralegal Studies and Public Administration, is the recipient of the Harold S. Sloan Trust Award. Vargas is spending the Summer 2019 semester in Seoul, South Korea at the Dankook University Summer Program.
“Winning the Harold S. Sloan Trust Award means so much to me since it alleviates part of the economic struggle that studying abroad may bring to first-generation, low-income college students like me,” said Vargas.
Vargas is also excited to able to practice her Korean along with being able to speak Spanish and English fluently.
“This experience will not only fulfill a life-long dream of truly understanding Korean culture but it will also help me practice the little Korean that I know and I will gain more vocabulary through conversation with peers and residents,” said Vargas.
