Handshake Job Search Tips

Handshake and Other Career Resources.

To begin, consider your career interests, such as position types (full-time, part-time, internships, etc.), geographic locations or remote work and job functions. Search and Apply for Jobs and Internships

Use search features and set your preferences to get personalized suggestions. You can search for opportunities by job title, employer name, location or even required skills. After you click the Save your Job Search link at the top of your results, you can set up job alerts to receive email notifications when similar positions are posted. Meet with a Career Counselor

You are assigned a career services office based on your program of study. Your designated career advisors are here to help you at all stages of your career development, including resume critiques, interview techniques, co-ops and internships, job search strategies and more! Develop a Career Plan

By meeting with your career counselor and taking the Focus-2 self assessment, you will be able to explore your professional goals and help develop a plan.

  1. Learn from the Pros: Career Services hosts a number of career development workshops and networking events throughout the year. Check out the events calendar and plan to attend sessions of interest!
  2. Review Your Digital Footprint: Update profiles and resumes on LinkedIn, Handshake and other sites where you are marketing yourself for employment opportunities.
  3. Avoid Job and Internship Scams: Scam artists take advantage of college students since they tend to be new to the job search. Be aware that job scams exist and learn how to recognize and avoid them.
  4. Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals: Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely; and hold yourself accountable. Create a routine with designated timelines in which you utilize avenues such as networking contacts and online searches.
