Community Message from University Police

On the evening of Sunday, November 21, the University Police Department received a report of suspicious individuals in and around the Feliciano School of Business, carrying a large case. The case was left in the building when the alleged suspicious person left the building, upon leaving the campus. The campus community was notified via our RAVE text alert system that a report of suspicious individuals was made to UPD and that there was no known emergency.

UPD immediately investigated the area and inside the building, going room by room. Rumors quickly began to spread over social media that there was a possible sighting of a gun on campus. No gun or suspicious individuals were found. The campus community was again notified via RAVE that there was no emergency on campus and that the alleged suspicious individuals had left the campus two hours earlier.

Further investigation by the UPD found that a student had come to campus to return audio-visual and tripod equipment to a room in the Feliciano School of Business. Door access codes confirmed this activity. UPD also directly contacted the student to confirm they had accessed the room and returned the equipment. It is believed the individual who reported the suspicious activity could have thought that the tripod case may have had a weapon in it. But at no time was a weapon seen or present on campus and when the report was made by the witness the alleged suspicious individual had already left campus.

UPD encourages all members of the campus community to report any suspicious activity. Also, all members of the campus community should refer to emergency notifications for confirmed details. Had this been an actual emergency the University would have immediately communicated safety protocols to be followed.
