College of the Arts Exhibits Works by 2012 Graduating Bachelor-degree Candidates

Exhibitions feature works by students in the BFA Studio and BA in Fashion Studies programs

The College of the Arts and Department of Art and Design are proud to present culminating exhibitions and screenings featuring works produced by students graduating this year from undergraduate programs in the Department of Art and Design.

Exhibition Dates and Locations

• BA Fashion Show, “Let Them Eat Couture,” May 3 at 7 p.m. at Memorial Theater; Admission: $1
• “NJ Shorts 1: New Visions from Montclair State University” May 4 at Clairidge Cinema 2, 486 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair, at 7:15 p.m.
• BFA in Studio Exhibition, May 13-25,  at the George Segal Gallery.* (This exhibition will be open to the public after the College of the Arts’ Convocation, on May 13, at Alexander Kasser Theater and the George Segal Gallery)

*Hours for exhibitions at the George Segal Gallery are: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursday, 12:30 to 7:30 p.m.

About the Exhibitions

Prof. Julie Heffernan, coordinator for the BFA in Studio program said that students have been working for four years discovering what they care about as artists. Sometimes they start in one area of concentration, such as ceramics, and discover that they need to work in another to get out the ideas that are inside of them, she adds.

“The BFA in Studio Program is highly competitive,” Heffernan explained. “Students are admitted only after a second portfolio review, generally in their sophomore or junior year, after they have experimented with a variety of media and taken a number of studio courses, and then identified the area of art making in which they want to concentrate.

Heffernan said this year’s class is particularly exceptional.

“These particular students this year have excelled in their areas of concentration,” she said.

The students whose works will be exhibited are Nick Andriulo, Erin B. Doyle, Ann-Marie Caruso, J. Max Chamberlain, Erin Doris, Dustin Gramando,
Woojae Kang, Zachary Klein, Haylee Anne, Samantha Mazart, Celina Vibert.

Meanwhile, students in the BFA in Industrial Design will also participate in an exhibition of their work said Dr. Denis Feigler, assistant professor and Industrial Design program director.

“Industrial design must not be mistaken with industrial arts,” cautioned Feigler. He explained that industrial design involves a wide range of knowledge and skills, such as design thinking, problem solving and designing solutions. “This critical analysis of problems and development of solutions through multiple testing and refinements allows businesses to advance,” Feigler said.

“Our graduates now are part of this leading visionary professional elite, working with major design firms and companies such as Movado, Toys ‘R’ Us, Marchon Eyewear, EK Success, MZ Burger, and Aqua Products. Industrial design is the hottest thing globally and I am proud to be able to educate the next generation of designers who will make a difference in people’s lives.”

Adopting a different format, students graduating from the BA Fashion Studies program will exhibit their year-end projects in the sixth annual fashion show titled, “Let Them Eat Couture.”

Associate Prof. Linda Reilly said students are in complete charge of the event.

“The students in the Senior Seminar class are the managers of the fashion show,” said Reilly. “They make the decisions about how they will conduct the show.”

This year’s show, “Let Them Eat Couture,” marks the sixth annual production and promises to invigorate all five senses with students showcasing visually enticing designs.

Seniors and undergraduate students majoring in Filmmaking will have their best shorts showcased during “NJ Shorts 1: New Visions from Montclair State University” as part of the Montclair Film Festival running May 1-6.
