Summer 2009 Workshops in Media

Montclair State University’s Department of Broadcasting offers two summer workshops: one to develop on-camera skills and one to learn AVID and Final Cut Pro editing software. The goal of our summer program is to serve both professionals looking for additional skills as well as students interested in furthering their academic coursework. Students will work closely with industry professionals to learn the newest and latest techniques in each area. Prior experience in film or video is not required.

Courses

Camera Ready Workshop On camera charisma is not just for news anchors anymore. Got an idea to pitch? A product to sell? A program to produce? You’ll be doing it on the web. In this age of citizen journalism, viral marketing and info-sharing, the ability to capture your audience and make an instant connection is crucial. This course will train you to write, produce and perform succinctly and successfully on television, radio, pod-casts and web-casts.

Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 15th – July 9th 1:00pm-4:00pm OR 6:00pm-9:00pm

Video Editing Workshop Learn video editing techniques used by today’s professional television editors. This hands-on course introduces you to the powerful AVID and Final Cut Pro editing programs used in many of the major television studios and production houses. Basic editing skills include: Three-point editing, trimming, Basic 2D & 3D effects, Creating titles and Color Correction. This is a great opportunity for beginners or those who already know Final Cut Pro and wish to learn their way around an AVID.

Instructors

Mary Alice Williams is a highly acclaimed broadcast journalist who brings to her students a wealth of experience in the field. Her investigative work on such topics as foreign policy, ethics, technology and health have made her a respected authority and recognized voice for public information. Williams preeminent stature as a news anchor, programmer, and radio and television personality extends to cable, corporate, public television and interactive media . She has been a part of news organizations as NBC, CNN, PBS and the Discovery Health Channel.

Beverly Peterson’s documentaries have been broadcast internationally, and screened at major festivals including; HBO, PBS, The Sundance Channel, The Sundance Film Festival, Human Rights Watch, Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Walker Art Center, The Warhol Museum, The Kitchen. /71 West Broadway: Ground Zero, New York, NY /was selected as part of the memorial presentation at the Library of Congress, which has included it in the national 9/11 film archive. Portions of /Invisible Revolution,/ were featured on ABC’s 20/20, Dateline, and HBO specials on domestic terrorism.

Cost: $1800.00 per course (covers all supplies, tuition, and fees).

Equipment and Facilities: Sony HD cameras and AVID/Final Cut Pro new HD studio and control room, AVID and Final Cut Pro editing suites.
