School of Communication and Media News Producer Steve McCarthy films Montclair middle-school teacher Dan Gill and his former student Tourrie Moses in his film "The One That Got Away."

School of Communication and Media’s News Producer Steve McCarthy co-produced a film which shares a significant story about the lives of a former student and teachers in the Township of Montclair.

The documentary film The One that Got Away, which airs locally in September 2016, tells the story of the once promising, popular student Tourrie Moses, from a troubled background who is now in prison for murder, and a group of Glenfield Middle School teachers in Montclair Township who had attempted to nurture his talents and help him thrive as a successful student.

Producers followed Glenfield Middle School social studies teacher Dan Gill who taught the once gifted and promising student, illuminating the relationship between the two men, and examined the circumstances that lead to Moses’s incarceration.

Especially timely and important, The One That Got Away addresses issues about teaching, familial and communal responsibility, and at-risk children. The documentary intends to spark a national discussion about these issues, and will be made available to schools nationwide, along with tailor-made study guides, produced by Montclair State’s College of Education and Human Services (CEHS).

Montclair State University Trustee Rose Cali was instrumental in raising funds in Montclair to nationally distribute the film and was the driving force to connect CEHS to nationally support this crucial project.

Producers John Block and Steve McCarthy, both from Montclair, New Jersey, have had long careers in network television, and are National Emmy Award winners.

The film will premiere on Channel 13 on September 12th at 9:30pm, and will air on sister stations NJTV and WLIW (Long Island) in September. Tune in to see the film:
