The event takes place on Wednesday, February 17, from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.  This inaugural event focuses on the evolving role of the media in sports journalism. The discussion brings together the sports industry’s leaders and innovators – commissioners, owners, players and commentators – to discuss the business of sports, assess the state of sports journalism, and highlight the issues at stake behind the money flowing into sports.

Panel participants include Val Ackerman, Commissioner of the Big East Conference, Felix Alvarez-Garmon, Senior Vice President of Latin America, Mexico and US Hispanic, IMG Media, Carlos Fleming, Senior Vice President of Talent Management for WME/IMG, Harvey Araton, Sports Reporter and Columnist for The New York Times and Andrew Hawkins, Wide Receiver for the Cleveland Browns.  Panel moderator: Kelly Whiteside, Assistant Professor of Sports Media and Journalism and USA Today Sports reporter (freelance).

The School of Communication and Media was formed in 2012 to better provide students with the theoretical and applied skill sets to succeed in the constantly changing communication and media landscape.  Areas of study encompass communication studies, communication and media arts, filmmaking, journalism, television and digital media – including television production, sound design, and sports media and journalism, and public relations.
