Veterans, Voices of Valor Record Music at Montclair State’s Recording Studio

Posted in: School of Communication and Media News

The Voices of Valor made its return to Montclair State after a three year absence, thanks to the efforts of adjunct instructor Martha Whiteley.  The organization encourages veterans who are attending the university to work as a group to synthesize their experiences into musical lyrics. Guided by musicians, such as Spro Gyra guitarist Julio Fernandez and singer Jennifer Lampert, plus support from a psychology mentor, they write and record a song, and then hold a CD release party.

Developed by husband and wife team Rena Fruchter and Brian Dallow, Voices of Valor is open to veterans of any age and background. No musical experience is required.  Recently, a group of vets, who are currently attending the university, recorded a song using the school’s audio studio in Schmitt Hall.

Whiteley (professor in the undergraduate and graduate Public Relations programs) is on the board of Voices of Valor. The new music CD will be released this week in honor of Veterans Day.
