Film Forum, Montclair Film Festival Join to Screen “The Iran Job” April 2

The School of Communication and Media’s speaker series, Film Forum – in conjunction with the University’s Global Education Center, History Department and College of Humanities and Social Science – will join with Montclair Film Festival to host the screening of The Iran Job, the true story of an American basketball player who accepts a job to play in Iran. The screening is on  April 2 at 7 p.m. at University Hall 1040 and is free and open to the public. A Q & A with the film’s creators – Till Schauder and Sara Nodjoumi – will immediately follow the screening.

The Iran Job follows American basketball player Kevin Sheppard as he accepts a job to play in Iran. With tensions running high between Iran and the West, Kevin tries to separate sports from politics, only to find that politics is impossible to escape within the country. Along the way, he forms an unlikely alliance with three outspoken Iranian women. Thanks to these women, his apartment turns into an oasis of free speech, where they discuss everything from politics to religion to gender roles. Kevin’s season in Iran culminates in something much bigger than basketball: the uprising and subsequent suppression of Iran’s reformist Green Movement – a powerful prelude to the sweeping changes across the Middle East in the wake of the Arab Spring.

Montclair Film Forum, sponsored by the film program at Montclair State University’s School of Communication and Media, is a weekly program featuring contemporary filmmakers speaking about their work and profession. Open to both University students and the general public, audience members are invited to ask questions and hear personalized inside-stories from some of the most innovative filmmakers working in the field today. The screening of “The Iran Job” comes on the heels of a presentation from award-winning filmmaker Hilary Brougher.
