College of the Arts Exhibits Works by 2015 Graduating Bachelor-degree Candidates

Exhibitions to showcase works by students in the Fine Art Studio, Industrial Design, Filmmaking, and Production and Design programs

The College of the Arts’ School of Communication and Media, Department of Art and Design and Department of Theatre and Dance are proud to present culminating exhibitions and screenings featuring works produced by students graduating this year from their undergraduate programs.

Exhibition Dates and Locations:

• BFA Filmmaking Screening: “NJ Shorts: New Visions from Montclair State University,” featured at the Montclair Film Festival, May 8, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., at Clairidge Cinema, 486 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair
• The Fashion Show: May 6 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium. Presented by students in the Fashion Studies program. (Follow link for ticket prices.)
• BFA Theatre, Production and Design Senior Showcase: May 18 in the Dance Theater, ground floor of Life Hall, from 4 to 6 p.m. (before the College of the Arts’ Convocation at 7 p.m.)
• Department of Art and Design BFA Senior Thesis Exhibition 2015: May 18-23 in the George Segal Gallery. There will be an Opening Reception May 18 at 9 p.m., following the College of the Arts’ Convocation.

* Hours for the George Segal Gallery are: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday, 12:30 to 7:30 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Industrial Design BFA Thesis Show:

Dr. Denis Feigler, associate professor and the director of the BFA Industrial Design major, said seven students will be showcasing their work at the Thesis Exhibition this year. The exhibitors are: Sarah Kijpatanasilp; Noemi Nagy; Arielle Cardone, Matthew Mendoza; Andrew Lim; Khashayar Afshar; and Adam El-Sawaf. They will be presenting design projects addressing a wide range of topics, including knee brace for orthopedic impairment; activity table for children; military personnel rescue system; temporary housing for in disaster areas; sustainable personal transportation; educational construction system for children; and respiratory oxygen system for in-home use.

“Industrial design must not be mistaken with industrial arts,” cautioned Feigler.

He explained that industrial design incorporates a wide range of knowledge and skills, such as design thinking, problem solving, human factors and designing economically and socially feasible product solutions.

“Designers’ ability of critical analysis of problems and development of optimal design solutions allows businesses to position their brands strategically. Consequently, industrial design is an essential part of businesses that manufacture and sell products.

“My objective is, to expose students to real-life design projects,” Feigler continued. “Therefore, I am constantly seeking industry partners that are willing to engage in collaboration. I believe education today cannot be disconnected from the corporate world. We proved to be very successful in securing industry partners and bringing real-life projects to the classroom, semester after semester. I am very confident that the strategy we implemented will result in educating visionary thinkers and socially responsible professionals.”
