The School of Communication and Media (SCM) served as a public square for the exchange of ideas this spring, hosting three leading lights of communications and media over several events.

Paula Kerger, President and CEO of PBS

On March 19, Paula Kerger, President and CEO of PBS, spent the day at the University, speaking and meeting with students and faculty through the Colloquium series, then meeting with University officials, trustees and the broader community at an evening event at Leshowitz Hall. Kerger was interviewed by SCM Director Merrill Brown, both for the evening event and for an episode of Carpe Diem, broadcast on public television throughout New Jersey.

Steven Rosenbaum, Founder and CEO of Magnify.net

On April 17, Steven Rosenbaum—a producer of films, creator of MTV UNfiltered and author of Curation Nation—participated in another Colloquium event. Rosenbaum, who is also the founder and CEO of Magnify.net, engaged students and faculty on the topics of aggregation, curation, and user contributions regarding web content.

Larry Kramer, CEO of USA Today

On April 18, USA Today CEO Larry Kramer visited several classes, talking to students about his career as a journalist and innovator (he founded and later sold Marketwatch to Dow Jones). Kramer also met with faculty and guests for an informal conversation hosted by Merrill Brown in the afternoon. Kramer talked about how he’s approaching the challenge of building a new future for the top-circulation paper, where it’s headed on the digital front, “paywalls” and the future of print.
