Three top N.Y. sports-broadcasting anchors talk to Broadcasting students October 17

The way sports news is reported and presented is rapidly changing in the age of the Internet and Twitter. Yet what is often overlooked is how ethics play into what journalists and media personalities cover and post.
Three of the New York area’s top sports broadcasting anchors – ESPN Radio‘s Don La Greca and Jared Max and WCBS Radio‘s Gordon Damer – provided Montclair State broadcasting students some fascinating insights into their business during a wide-ranging discussion at the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center on Oct. 17. The program was taped for a future showing on Carpe Diem.
Moderated by Marc Rosenweig, assistant professor of broadcasting, the three journalists gave students concrete examples of ethical standards and ground rules for covering sports in a fast-changing media landscape. La Greca, Max and Damer also regaled the students with stories of their humble career beginnings at Sports Phone, the telephone pay service which provided a 60-second slice of sports news in the 1980s.
The program was the latest in a series of collaborative efforts between Montclair State’s Broadcasting Department and Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center, designed to help students examine media ethics and topical issues from top professionals in the field.
