CNN Journalists Share Career Advice with Broadcasting Students

On November 23, 2009, 60 students from the Department of Broadcasting courses “Introduction to Broadcasting” and “Media Ethics” were treated to a special visit from CNN journalists John King and Dana Bash. Invited by Broadcasting Professor STUART SCHWARTZ, a veteran ABC news producer and the father of Dana Bash, the two journalists shared career advice and answered questions for the students.

Broadcasting Chair Larry Londino Appeared on “Dateline,” 12/11

LARRY LONDINO, Chair of the Department of Broadcasting, appeared on NBC Dateline: The Secret Life of Tiger Woods in December which explored the automobile accident involving Tiger Woods leading to the disclosure of his multiple marital infidelities. Londino wrote a biography of Woods in 2006, and several weeks before the accident he submitted a revision of the book. After the incident on November 27^th, Londino added an epilogue to that revision that strongly contradicted the formerly pristine Woods image. Londino was also interviewed and appeared on an MSNBC Special, The Rise and Fall of Tiger Woods. In 1996 Londino produced and directed a television documentary, Shady Rest: A Place For Us that highlighted the existence of the first African American golf and country club in Scotch Plains, New Jersey in the 1020s. The research for that production that aired on WNET and NJN led to further research on minorities and golf, and finally the book on Woods.

The Dumont Television Center Expands Operations

The Dumont Television Center continues to upgrade its facilities to high definition broadcast and has expanded its operations to the second floor. The new space provides additional internal real estate for the Center’s expanded HD capabilities and upgraded services on the first floor, while creating much needed space upstairs.

The Dumont Television Center proudly announces the opening of its new multi-purpose room and classroom on the second floor. The multi-purpose facility will be used as a green room for both internal and external clients, for meetings and as a space to shoot HD video. The room boasts a significant broadcasting memorabilia collection including vintage televisions, radios, advertisements and novelties. The classroom is playfully designed with matching desks, and includes Internet capability with a 46″ high definition monitor.

Also scheduled for the spring is the creation of the Dumont Post Production Center including a ten-station Final Cut Pro lab with two 46″ high definition monitors, sound amplification and a four-station AVID suite. For the first time, a Montclair State Post Production Center will serve both Broadcasting and Film majors in one location. An engineering office and parts facility will also be housed in the newly designated space.

People Spotlights . . .

Faculty

DAVID SANDERS participated in the International Music Council “World Forum on Music” in Tunisia this past October. His song, “Song for Darfur”, written for the 2007 NJ State Rally for Darfur, is being published by Transcontinental Publishing in a folio collection of new social action songs, due out in May 2010.

As part of Montclair State’s Global Education Chinese Festival of Arts and Humanities, Broadcasting Department Chair LARRY LONDINO, Assistant Professor MARC ROSENWEIG, MSU Student BOB ROWE and William Paterson University Professor of Art Zhiyuan Cong visited Beijing and Guangzhou last fall to interview some of China’s top artists. The interviews will be on display along with the artist’s work at the George Segal Gallery on campus from March 4 to April 9. Several of the artists will be visiting the University. The Broadcasting Department will produce a special edition of “Carpe Diem” on local cable featuring interviews with the artists.

A 2010 Global Education Award allowed BEVERLY PETERSON to return to Guatemala to complete production for a documentary about the extraordinary field work of Maria Martin, a pioneering NPR Journalist. She provides training to indigenous journalists who are the main link between their villages and the global community.

Alumnus and Adjunct Professor, BOB SHAPIRO, has been nominated for a New York Emmy for his 2009 documentary On The Frontlines: Doing Business in China (Feature 2).

PEGGY HEALY ’09 served as a co-coordinator for HBO as part of “We Are One, The Obama Inaugural Celebration” at the Lincoln Memorial Center. She is currently a full-time production assistant with the nationally syndicated talk show, “The Wendy Williams Show.”

RAYMOND CARSILLO ’07 works as a producer, specializing in original productions for radio station 1050 AM’s and ESPN Video Games’ websites. He is also a writer for Comicvine.com, Examiner.com, Collider.com, Lundberg.me and hosts a weekly on-air segment Fridays on the Brandon Tierney Show on 1050 AM ESPN.

CRISTINA PINZON ’08 is now working at the 20th Legislative District office of Senator Raymond Lesniak, Assemblyman Joseph Cryan and Assemblywoman Annette Quijano where she is her Legislative Aide.

IOANNIS HALKIAS ’04 is an Audio Engineer with the Fox News Channel and currently works on “Happening Now! “, which airs from 11am- 1pm and Studio B with Shepard Smith airing from 3pm-4pm. She has been with the Fox News Channel since May 2007.
