Feb 17, 2021 @1:30pm | War and Peace: Transitional Justice, Post Ad Bellum and Transformations during Transitions

Posted in: Work in Progress

This workshop introduces a co-authored chapter for a textbook, Mapping Global Justice: Perspectives, Cases and Practice by Montclair faculty, Arnaud Kurze. The chapter will provide you with a historical overview of major contributions to debates over global justice, war and peace. The first section of this chapter starts out with an overview of early debates on just war theory from a global perspective by differentiating between jus ad bellum (right to go to war) and jus in bello (right conduct in war) before delving into questions of protecting non combatants and civilians. Following from this, the second part of this chapter explores a third category of just war theory jus post bellum, dealing with the morality of post-war reconstruction and settlements. The concept of peace and how to best implement it sustainably will be explored against the backdrop of concepts of collective memory and societies dealing with past mass atrocities and violence.

Please contact Arnaud Kurze or Kate Temoney if you would like to join the workshop session.
