This roundtable discussion addresses important conceptual and empirical questions of dealing with the past, based on New Critical Spaces in Transitional Justice (2019), an edited volume exploring alternative forms of post-conflict and post-authoritarian justice.

Gathering volume contributors, scholars and practitioners in international relations, human rights, and the humanities this roundtable explores political violence, particularly gender-based, during conflict and under repressive regimes against the backdrop of the role and impact of art and collective memory in the aftermath of these atrocities. This roundtable seeks to address a number of important questions, such as: to what extent have gendered norms affected practices to advocate for accountability and justice. Furthermore, what role do the arts play in the aftermath of conflict, political violence and human rights violations. Finally, how have marginalized victim groups strengthened their voices against official state-centric narratives rooted in memory politics.
