Family Education Rights and Privacy Act
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children’s education records. However, when a student turns 18 years old or enters a post-secondary institution at any age, the rights under FERPA transfer from the parents to the student.
It is the University’s policy that student data should only be released to the parent by the student themselves. If your parent, spouse or legal guardian needs to have direct contact with a University administrator or faculty member on campus, please visit the Proxy Information web page for information about setting up a temporary Proxy Account.
