Announcing a New Program at Montclair State: PhD in Clinical Psychology
Posted in: News
The Psychology Department at Montclair State University is pleased to announce the launch of its PhD program in Clinical Psychology, with the program’s inaugural class starting in Fall 2017.
Integrating Research and Practice
The mission of the PhD program is to develop leaders in the science and practice of clinical psychology. Based on the scientist-practitioner training model, the program will provide students with extensive training in evidence-based approaches to clinical assessment and intervention, along with thorough grounding in the clinical research process and skills needed to develop, critically evaluate, synthesize, and apply scientific knowledge.
Focus on Children, Adolescents, and Families
The program is also one of the few across the country to feature a primary focus on working with children, adolescents, and families, making this is a truly unique training experience. Through their coursework, field experiences, and research training, students will learn about the psychological needs of children and adolescents, as well as developmental considerations in psychopathology, assessment, and treatment, including the role of family and social contexts in psychological adjustment.
Preparation for a Range of Job Opportunities
Graduates will be well trained for positions in a wide variety of settings, ranging from academic/research settings (e.g., colleges, universities, medical schools) to more clinically oriented psychologist positions in hospitals, schools, community mental health agencies, forensic settings, and independent practice.
Additional Highlights for Students
- Receive clinical and research training from faculty members with expertise in clinical psychology. Interests represented among the program’s core faculty include risk factors and interventions for child/adolescent anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress, mental health service delivery and access, school-based academic assessment and intervention, adolescent decision-making in plea bargaining, forensic assessment, and neurorehabilitative interventions.
- Train in Montclair State University’s Center for Clinical Services. Students will take many of their courses and complete clinical practica at this new clinical training facility, which has been outfitted with 24 assessment/treatment rooms featuring state-of-the-art technology for live supervision.
- Ability to specialize in growing subfields. Students will have the opportunity to pursue specialized training in school psychology and forensic psychology. The school psychology emphasis will focus on evidence-based services for children and adolescents in school-based settings, particularly as they relate to psychoeducational assessment. The forensic psychology emphasis will focus on evidence-based services for children and adolescents whose lives interface with the legal system.
- Opportunities for full funding, including stipends and tuition waivers. Students will have opportunities for funding through research fellowships, teaching assistantships, grants, and clinical positions.
