The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a vision for people, planet, peace and prosperity to be achieved through partnership and solidarity. It is now in its fourth year of implementation. Over the past years, progress has been made with regard to a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their targets. A number of actions have been undertaken by Governments and other stakeholders to respond to the 2030 Agenda more broadly. However, progress has been slow on many SDGs and the most vulnerable people and countries continue to suffer the most. The global response needs to become more ambitious. The HLPF takes stock of where we are in terms of SDG progress and identify challenges and gaps in SDG achievement.
Speakers bring various perspectives on the follow up and review of implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. They indicate what they see as priorities for the political leadership and point to urgent multi-stakeholder action needed to accelerate progress. The discussions of the HLPF under the auspices of ECOSOC will contribute to the preparations of the HLPF under the auspices of the General Assembly – the SDG Summit to be convened in September 2019.
