Profile
Sara Matsuzaka, Assistant Professor, received her PhD in Social Work from Fordham University. Before joining Montclair State University, she completed a postdoctoral research appointment in the Department of Psychology at the University of Virginia. Sara has experience working as a NY-state licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in outpatient substance use treatment and private practice settings. As such, she is deeply intentional about producing research that can be directly applied to promote anti-oppressive and culturally responsive practice with diverse client populations.
Sara's overriding research objective is to examine how systemic oppression contributes to mental health and substance use disorder inequities among groups vulnerable to intersectional oppression at the nexus of their gender, sexuality, and racial identities. Specifically, her research falls within two domains: 1) to promote equity in substance use treatment and 2) to enhance the application of intersectionality in social work research, practice, and education.
Sara teaches in the MSW program. She instructs SOWK 500: Generalist Social Work Practice I, SOWK 521: Engaging Individuals Affected by Substance Use and Misuse, SOWK 601: Practice Research Evaluation, and CHAD 603: Research and Evaluation.
Specialization
