Lisa Lynn Brooks, PhD (Choctaw) is an assistant professor of Educational Foundations and Co-Director of Native American & Indigenous Studies at Montclair State University. She is a former vice principal in Paterson Public Schools with over 20 years of experience in public education. Dr. Brooks’ interests range from teacher education and assessment to educational activism, specifically focused on Native American and Indigenous education. Her public and scholarly work focuses on promoting Native American knowledge and Indigenous education in K-12 education, impacts and generational experiences of Native American Boarding Schools, and oral histories employed in curriculum work. Her recent work can be found at the Montclair Art Museum’s Interwoven Power: Native Knowledge/Native Art exhibition. Her past projects include writing curriculum for the grant-funded Chilocco Indian Agricultural School project and assisting with the design of the graphic novel, Chilocco Indian School: A Generational Story. Currently, Dr. Brooks serves as PI on a 2024-2025 NJ Council for the Humanities Incubation grand, “The Lessons Are To Give Away: Exploring Indigenous Women’s Stories” (with Co-PI: Dr. Maisa Taha, Anthropology). This project makes visible the work of Lenape and Lenape-descendent women advocates who share knowledge that deepen cultural awareness among young people. Additionally, Dr. Brooks is a contracted oral historian for the Catholic Archdiocese Indian School Project where she collects stories regarding experiences of attendees and families of Catholic boarding schools in Oklahoma.
