Statement on the Passing of Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr.

On behalf of the entire Montclair State University community, we share our sincere condolences for the family and loved ones of Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. As a dedicated public servant, the impact he had went far beyond Montclair and the state of New Jersey. Never losing sight of his Newark roots, he cared deeply about the health and safety of our families and communities, and worked tirelessly to pass legislation that addressed our most pressing needs. 

In particular, he was a strong advocate for higher education and understood the important role it plays in our state’s economy. As a community leader and the parent of a Montclair State University alumna, Rep. Payne understood the importance of making a high quality, affordable education available to all students, regardless of their background. We valued his support of the College Affordability Act, as well as the advocacy he demonstrated for New Jersey universities, including Montclair. He will be deeply missed.
