Statement on Vandalism in Amphitheater
Posted in: News for Faculty & Staff, News for Students
It saddens me to inform you that earlier today two swastikas and the words “Death to Israel” were found scratched into a step of the Amphitheater.
The student who reported finding the swastikas admitted to the University Police Department that he himself scratched them into the stone. The student, who identifies as Jewish, stated that he thought placing the swastikas on campus would compel the University to take action in support of the campus Jewish community.
The University Police Department immediately conducted an investigation and notified the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. A Crime Scene Unit was dispatched to document and investigate the scene because the scratching of the antisemitic symbol is a bias incident.
I encourage our students to take advantage of our many opportunities for counseling and support, including services provided through CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services), the Student Health Center, the Office of Social Justice and Diversity, the Office of Student Belonging and the Dean of Students Office. Each of those areas is uniquely equipped to assist our students with all aspects of their well being.
Counselors are available for all students, 24 hours a day. Call Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at 973-655-5211 and select Option “2.” Students may also contact the Dean of Students Office for assistance.
