Current state law and University policy prohibits smoking and/or use of tobacco, vapor or similar products inside any campus building. Cannabis possession and use is strictly prohibited.
Effective Tuesday, September 1, 2020, for the Montclair campus and December 1, 2022 for the Bloomfield campus, use of all tobacco products are prohibited on-campus.
The University implemented a phased Tobacco Free Campus Policy in spring 2017 due to documented health risks associated with tobacco products, both for the individual user and those affected by secondhand smoke. Accordingly, the Montclair campus is fully smoke-free, tobacco-free and vapor-free as of September 1, 2020 and the Bloomfield campus as of September 1, 2024, to sustain a healthy campus environment. Smoking and the use of tobacco products shall be prohibited outdoors on all campus property, including, but not limited to, parking lots, paths, fields, and sports/recreational areas, as well as in all personal vehicles while on campus. This policy applies to all students, faculty, staff, and other persons on campus, regardless of the purpose for their visit. View Code of Conduct.
Any member of the campus community may ask an individual to comply with the provisions of this regulation. Further, any individual who fails to comply with state and/or federal law (ie: smoking indoors) is subject to a fine as determined by the local court where the summons is filed.
University community members share the responsibility for adhering to and enforcing this policy. Individuals noticing violations of the policy should be respectful to tobacco users when communicating the policy.
Violators will be asked to dispose of the tobacco/vape product. An educational approach will be used to enforce this policy. This means mechanisms of education and encouragement. Campus community members, if they feel comfortable, may verbally remind violators of the policy.
