Oct. 3, 2024 – Philosophy for Lunch – “Aesthetic Judgements”

Description: Judgements about beauty are often considered to lack objectivity. When I claim that something is beautiful, in other words, my claim tends to be seen as purely subjective—merely an expression of my personal taste or opinion. In this week’s Philosophy for Lunch we will think carefully about the relationship between subjectivity and objectivity in judgements about beauty or what philosophers called ‘aesthetic judgements’ by reading selections from Stanley Cavell’s, “Must we Mean What We Say?” No prior knowledge of art, philosophy or beauty required—just your own personal point of view!
