March 20, 2025 – Philosophy for Lunch – “Mind and Body in the Descartes-Hobbes Debate”
Description: In the Meditations (1641), René Descartes presented an original view of the human being, asserting that mind and body are distinct substances—one immaterial, capable of thought, the other material, governed by physical laws. Together with his Meditations, Descartes published objections from his contemporaries, including Thomas Hobbes, who rejected Cartesian dualism. Hobbes, a materialist, argued that mental activities can be explained in terms of bodily motion. In this week’s P4L, we will revisit the Hobbes-Descartes debate by exploring Hobbes’ Objections to the Meditations, and Descartes’ Replies.
