Dec. 12, 2024 – Philosophy for Lunch – “Animals as Ends-In-Themselves”
Description: For philosopher Christine Korsgaard, we are obligated to treat non-human animals always as ends-in-themselves, never as mere means to ends. To treat an animal as an end-in-herself is to promote her pursuit of activities that maintain her functional good and ability to live well. For Korsgaard, it is incoherent to claim that our good is more important than that of other animals; the comparison is implausible, since our aim of the good is constituted by different pursuits. In this P4L, we will discuss how we treat other animals, and whether we aid, or disrupt, their pursuit of living well. Special Guest: Madison Gamba
