Nov. 21, 2024 – Philosophy for Lunch – “The Ghost in the Machine”

Description: In The Concept of Mind, Gilbert Ryle argues against philosophical tradition. Philosophers, he claims, wrongly assume there is some kind of ghostly, spiritual substance—a mind or a soul—that exists independently of one’s body. But his criticism isn’t merely that there is no such thing as a ‘mind’ or ‘soul’. Instead, Ryle thinks that the tradition is guilty of a kind of fundamental, conceptual confusion—a category mistake, in his terms. This P4L explores this alleged category mistake and how it is supposed to undermine “the dogma of the Ghost in the Machine”.
