The Master of Arts (MA) in Teaching Middle Grades Mathematics offered by the Department of Mathematics at Montclair State University will now be offered completely online. The MA program features five content courses and six courses in mathematics pedagogy. These courses focus on strengthening students’ content knowledge of mathematics for teaching, while modeling effective teaching practices.
“Many of our graduate students are balancing work and other life responsibilities, so we are making our program more flexible and accessible to meet our students’ needs,” said Dr. Jonathan Cutler, graduate program coordinator.
The fully online Teaching Middle Grades Mathematics programs offer synchronous meetings, which provide opportunities for live interaction with classmates and faculty in the online format. Students in the fully online program will engage in high-quality coursework that leverages web-based tools for hands-on activities, rich explorations and critical discussions of contemporary issues in mathematics education.
Our programs provide teachers with a broad understanding of the fundamental principles that underlie middle school mathematics, while making practical connections to the classroom. Increased mathematics content and pedagogical knowledge will result in an enhanced level of confidence and appreciation of mathematics in teachers and students.
With the addition of the Online MA program, the department now offers three fully online graduate programs: Teaching Middle Grades Mathematics (Certificate), Teaching Middle Grades Mathematics (MA) and the Certificate in Mathematics, Elementary School with Subject Matter Specialization (with a teaching endorsement): Mathematics Grades 5-8.
