Montclair State began its virtual commemoration of Women’s History Month on Monday, March 1, by recognizing and honoring women’s suffrage and the role models who have left indelible marks on society.
“Women from all walks of life were instrumental in building our nation and have a very rich and inspiring history in our country,” said President Susan A. Cole, reading a proclamation to kick off the observance. The contributions include social movements for women’s suffrage and civil rights, and leadership roles in social political, cultural, economic and intellectual development.
At Montclair State, “women from diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds have served our campus community with extraordinary leadership, vision and intellectual achievements,” Cole said. “Women graduates have used their education to make important contributions to society.”
Cole has served as the University’s first woman president for the past 23 years and in brief remarks noted how the Montclair State community has recognized the importance of a society that provides “equality of opportunity as its core and definition.”
This year’s theme celebrates women’s suffrage – “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to be Silent.” Speakers noted the achievements of Kamala Harris, the nation’s first woman vice president, as well as the first Black American and first person of South Asian descent, who represents “what can come true to women who desire to follow their dreams,” said Patricia Ogbonna, a senior majoring in Psychology and member of the Gamma Rho Sorority, co-sponsor with the Women’s Center of the opening event.
“We want to honor, celebrate and learn more about the women who came before us, from Shirley Chisholm to Amanda Gorman,” said Suzanne Pasquino ’16, program associate in the Office of Social Justice and Diversity. “We also want to do our part in fighting against women’s issues to help make way for our future leaders and innovators.”
Throughout the month, the Office for Social Justice and Diversity will post on social media women suffragettes and politicians who have made or are making history.
The Volunteer Center will also be accepting donations of non-perishables and toiletries for Eva’s Village in Paterson. Donations can be dropped off at the Volunteer Center in Student Center Room 104J (CSI Suite).
