The Montclair State University Chorale will make its first post-pandemic appearance with the New Jersey Symphony later this month when the student ensemble performs Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. In addition, the Symphony itself will perform a work by longtime Montclair Township resident George Walker, the first Black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for music.
Performances will take place at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on Thursday, March 30 at 1:30 p.m. and Friday, March 31 at 8 p.m. and at the State Theatre in New Brunswick on Sunday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
Students and employees may purchase tickets for $10 with promo code MSU10, while alumni and friends of the University will get a 40% discount with promo code MONTCLAIR40. Enter the promo code before selecting seats on the symphony’s website.
Heather J. Buchanan, director of Choral Activities for the John J. Cali School of Music, will conduct the 130-voice choir in this performance of one of the world’s great masterworks of vocal music. She describes Fauré’s Requiem as a “warm, human-scale work full of consolation and hope for those of us left to mourn the passing of our loved ones.
“This requiem is music that speaks directly and eloquently to the heart of a shared human experience – grief.”
