Emmy award winner Marty Appel, former public relations director of the New York Yankees, will speak on the subject of Paterson’s own Baseball Hall of Famer Mike “King” Kelly. Kelly, a 19th century star, was considered the most entertaining and charismatic figure of his time, and is generally considered the father of autographing, as well as the author of the game’s first autobiography, subject of the nation’s first “pop hit record,” (Slide, Kelly, Slide), and the subject of Appel’s 1995 biography, also called “Slide, Kelly, Slide.” The book, one of 25 written by Appel, won the coveted “Casey Award” as baseball book of the year at the centennial of his passing. Although born in Troy, NY (and he died and is buried in Boston), Paterson was where he was raised and learned the game. Appel is frequently featured on YES Network “Yankeeographies,” and is generally considered the leading historian of the Yankees.
