German Scholarships Available to Montclair State Students

Internal Scholarships for Montclair State University Students

Conrad J. Schmitt Scholarship (2 per year)
Amount: $5,000
Criteria: Awarded to two World Languages and Cultures or Spanish undergraduate majors (full time prospective junior or senior) each year and to a graduate student in alternate years. Preference for non-native speaking students who are studying foreign languages as their second language; academic achievement; minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA; financial need. Note that German majors and double majors are eligible; Language, Business & Cultures majors are not.

The Jean McVean Scholarship (2 per year)
Amount: up to $2,500
Criteria: This scholarship is available to full-time language majors in the Department of World Languages and Cultures or other language departments. Preference will be given to students who are entering their junior or senior year in the eligible major, and the award will take into account both the academic merit and financial need of applicants. Note that German majors and double majors are eligible; Language, Business & Cultures majors are not. Minimum cumulative GPA required: 3.0 Please note: A FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form must be on file with the MSU Financial Aid Office for students to be eligible for this award.

Diane Falk Romaine Scholarship for German Majors
Amount: $1000
Criteria: A $1,000 scholarship to support much-needed aid to qualifying students pursuing a full-time undergraduate degree in German with a GPA of 3.0 or higher with first preference for students from New Jersey. Recipients are selected by the Office of Financial Aid in consultation with the Coordinator of the German Program.
No application required.

Montclair-Graz Sister City Scholarship
Amount: full tuition and monthly cost-of-living stipend for one full year (this is the most generous scholarship available to Montclair State University students!)
Criteria: Academic excellence based on transcripts, personal statement, Montclair internal interview, and other criteria.

SOAR Scholarship
Amount: varies, often $1500-$2000
Criteria: SOAR is for students with FAFSA financial need studying abroad on faculty-led, summer programs, semester programs, or year-long programs. Many Montclair students receive this support for study abroad.

Erasmus+ Scholarship
Amount: varies, often $1000 travel fund + $1000/month stipend during a semester abroad
Criteria: Academic excellence and enrollment in a semester-long study abroad program at the Uni Graz in Austria. In some years, additional restrictions may apply based on major field. Students are not required to be German majors.
Deadline: October 15 for Spring study abroad; March 1 for Fall study abroad

Kade Foundation Scholarship 
Amount: often $1,500; often 8 available per summer
Criteria: For Montclair students studying abroad in the University of Konstanz or Munich International Summer University programs. The scholarship is renegotiated every year, but has often been eight $1,500 scholarships for Montclair students only. Students must have a good record in all language courses. Confirmation of enrollment in one of the two German programs listed above must be provided for the scholarship to be disbursed.

Margaret B. Holz Scholarship Program 
Amount: approximately $250
Criteria: Awarded to an undergraduate major in a foreign language to study abroad. Student must have a good record in all language courses with an overall B average in all university courses. Confirmation of enrollment in an academic language program abroad must be provided for the scholarship to be disbursed. This may not be used for faculty-led study abroad programs. Note that German majors and double majors are eligible, but Language, Business & Cultures majors with a concentration in German are not.

External Scholarships that Have Been Awarded to Students of German

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Amount: Varies; up to $5000 for a semester; also available for Montclair summer programs
Criteria: Many Montclair students have received this extra funding, which can be given in addition to any internal awards. Available for students eligible for PELL financial aid grants.
Deadline: early March (for fall travel) and early October (for spring travel) deadlines

Middlebury Language Schools Full Scholarship for Students Attending Hispanic-Serving Institutions
Amount: full tuition as well as room and board at Middlebury Summer Language School
Criteria: Academic dedication. Two Montclair students have received this scholarship to attend the German Summer School in Vermont in back-to-back recent years.
