The American Society of the French Academic Palms (ASFAP) Scholarship Committee has selected Schnaïca Jean Charles as the winner of the Turan Future Teacher Scholarship. The Scholarship of $4,000 dollars is awarded to a University student who has a major or minor in French studies and is in the junior year at a University. The primary purpose of the scholarship is to provide students with the opportunity to become more proficient in the language and to understand and appreciate cultures in the French-speaking world.
Schnaïca met all the requirements of the selection committee which included her interest in a future career goal of teaching French on the secondary level and her interest and commitment to the study of French and francophone cultures.
She will select a study program of approximately 4 weeks in a French university summer program and will submit a final article on her summer experience to the Scholarship committee for publication.
Schnaïca is a junior whose courses of study include French and Psychology. She participates actively in both university and community programs. She attends French activities sponsored by the Department of World Languages and Cultures and is a member of the Montclair State Gospel singers. Schnaïca is also involved in her community where she teaches ESL to children and developed a Bible study group for university students. She also is planning a radio-talk show in Kreyòl, French, and English.
Schnaïca is looking forward to an enriching experience in language and culture in which she will improve her competence in French and the experience of living in a francophone country which she will share when she returns.
