The mathematics department’s graduate degrees provide students with the advanced material needed for leadership roles in: business, industry, and government. Our teaching programs produce teachers that will excel at the high school and community college levels. The concentration in mathematics education will upgrade the skills of teachers and offers a special combination of courses in mathematics, mathematics education and the use of technology in mathematics education.

MS in Mathematics, Mathematics Education Concentration

The Concentration in Mathematics Education blends graduate courses in mathematics and mathematics education, giving students a well-rounded experience that will enhance their teaching. This degree does not lead to a teaching certification, but is intended for students who are currently teachers interested in enhancing their content knowledge, exploring current research-based pedagogies, or considering doctoral studies in mathematics education. MA in Teaching Middle Grades Mathematics

Please note that the post-baccalaureate initial certification MAT program for P12 certification, the Mathematics, Instructional Certification: Teacher Certification in Mathematics (Preschool-Grade 12), is managed by the College of Education.

Doctoral Degree

The Mathematics Education PhD program provides candidates with opportunities to obtain expertise in the teaching of mathematics, educational leadership and curriculum development and modification and to conduct research in mathematics education. It recognizes the influence that teacher leaders have in renewing and strengthening our nation’s educational system and the critical importance of strong education programs in our nation’s quest for improving our social and political democracy while maintaining its technological superiority.

Students applying for full time studies are eligible for the Montclair State University Westerdahl Fellowship.
