Math and Art Day a Huge Success
The Department held the inaugural Linking Art and Science through Education and Research (LASER): Math & Art Day event on campus on Saturday, April 15th
Posted in: Students and Alumni
The event was attended by 24 high school students (freshman, sophomores and juniors) from various parts of NJ (Paterson, Parsippany, Clifton, Montville, Teaneck and Morristown). The program was conducted by two faculty members, Drs. Bogdan Nita and Ashwin Vaidya, several math student ambassadors, John O’Meara, Kaitlyn Cohan, Rocco Julian, Vlad Nita, Erick Tapia and two other students, Irene (Yewon) Kim and Phoebe Zielonka. Our students did an awesome job and were extremely helpful; we could not have done it without their help.
Throughout the day, students engaged in a presentation about mathematics, participated in a math quiz, walked around campus, and engaged with a Desmos-based project in which they learned to create architectural designs using math (see picture below). Visiting students have been asked to share their work to the department by the end of May to be displayed on our website.
We hope this will be the start of an ongoing annual event that allows the Department of Mathematics to connect with our local schools and also use it to recruit interested students to our programs. Thanks to all that made this LASER event so successful!
