Every year we have fellowships and assistantships available for new doctoral students. We make fellowship and assistantship decisions after we make admissions decisions. Therefore, any prospective applicant would need to be accepted into our program to be eligible for an assistantship. Those assistantships are competitive, so they are not guaranteed.
Westerdahl Fellowships
The Montclair State University Westerdahl Fellowship supports full-time studies in the Ph.D. program in Mathematics Education at Montclair State University. Each fellowship provides full tuition and a stipend of $25,000 per year, renewable for up to four years.
Grant-funded Doctoral Fellowships
The grant-funded Doctoral Fellowships provide support for full-time students. The fellowship includes a stipend, usually around $22,000 (though this amount may vary), and a tuition waiver that typically covers 18 to 24 credits per academic year. Doctoral fellows are selected by the grant’s principal investigator (PI) based on academic and research accomplishments, alignment between the advisor’s and student’s research interests, and the student’s proficiency in the skills and knowledge required by the advisor’s research program and its funding source. Fellows generally have 20 hours of weekly research duties assigned by the PI.
University-funded Doctoral Assistantships
University-funded Doctoral Assistantships provide support for full-time students. All doctoral assistants are required to fulfill research responsibilities, with the number of service hours per week adjusted according to the assistantship award amount. Full-time assistantships offer a stipend (currently up to $22,000) and cover up to 10 credits of tuition per semester.
Hourly Research Positions for Part-time Students
University-funded part-time research positions provide stipends based on weekly service hours or offer tuition remission for 1 to 8 credits per semester. Additionally, faculty research grants may fund part-time doctoral students as hourly workers during the academic year or summer. The grant’s principal investigator (PI) selects hourly workers based on their academic and research record, alignment between the advisor’s and student’s research interests, and the student’s proficiency in the skills and knowledge required for the advisor’s research program and its funding source.
Adjunct Instructor Positions
Advanced doctoral students nearing the completion of their programs may be eligible for adjunct instructor positions. Adjunct instructors are solely responsible for their courses and are compensated on a per-credit basis. The qualifications of all adjunct instructors are set by the department.
