From the President
The creation of new knowledge is a central element of Montclair State University’s mission. It propels our growth and places us as an important contributor among New Jersey’s public universities. So, it is particularly gratifying when our leadership in cutting-edge research and scholarship receives prominent national recognition.
In this issue, you’ll learn how years of strategically planned development of the University’s faculty, facilities, enrollment and programs have resulted, for the first time, in Montclair State’s classification as a Research Doctoral University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
This prestigious ranking not only affirms the important discoveries and contributions of University researchers and scholars, but it also recognizes the strength of our doctoral programs. Increasingly funded with support from federal agencies, Montclair State’s research activities continue to grow in scope and importance.
This upward trajectory validates our success in providing solutions to some of society’s thorniest challenges. Whether combating the threat of bioterrorism, or garnering new insights into climate change, University researchers are working to make the world a better place for future generations.
Our students also are problem solvers who dream of making a lasting, positive impact beyond our campus community. In these pages, you will meet several accomplished student entrepreneurs who have developed up-to-the-minute, leading-edge products and services. By launching innovative new businesses before they graduate, they are already well on the way to fully realizing their dreams.
This issue also looks at how the University’s alumni are making a difference in their communities and supporting the development of the next generation of graduates.
I hope that you, as alumni and friends of Montclair State, will take pride in these accomplishments and achievements. It is only with your continued and generous support that we are able to fulfill our institutional promise to create and share new knowledge and make access to a high-quality higher education possible for our more than 20,000 students.
