William McCreath

Having served as the Grand Marshal of the past seven Commencement ceremonies, Professor Emeritus William McCreath is one of the more recognizable professors at Montclair State. McCreath retired in 2013 after teaching ceramics at the University for 47 years. A generation of students recall their mentor’s passion and caring and his ability to guide and nurture budding artists. “He was a master at facilitating young artists on their own personal journey of creativity,” says Jason Timochko ’00, ’07 MA. Lisa Westheimer ’08 MA always felt challenged but also “like he had my back. He stood by while I set myself up for failure but was always there to catch me as I fell.” Huda Shanawani ’97, ’09 MA recalls, “He showed us how to look at life with an open mind and to see things from the other side. He is the kind of teacher I wish every student will get one day in their life.”
