Athletes continue to excel in the classroom

The Red Hawks’ success this past year extended to the classroom, as Montclair State athletes also scored numerous academic honors.

Four student-athletes were named to the Capital One Academic All-America Teams, including two first-team selections with softball’s Alex Hill and track’s Heather Gearity becoming the first female student-athletes to earn the honor. Senior Megan Bosland and sophomore Abby Erler, who helped the field hockey team to the NCAA National Championship game, were named to the second and third teams, respectively. The four were also named to the Capital One Academic All-District Teams, joined by football’s Brian Bloom, Doug Pannone and A.J. Scoppa and lacrosse’s Tierney Conlon and Michael Dorn.

Senior Kelcie Wavra was named the Skyline Conference’s Scholar Athlete of the Year for women’s lacrosse, while 68 Red Hawks earned spots on the NJAC All-Academic Team, with Scoppa and Erler being named to the First Team and juniors Lou Martini (baseball) and Allison Wacker (soccer) named to the second team.

In April, Montclair State honored its athletes’ academic achievements during “National Student-Athlete Day, a Celebration of Academic and Athletic Excellence.” More than 200 student-athletes were named to the 3.0 Club for those with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. In addition, 103 athletes were named to the Dean’s List for 2012–13, and the National College Athlete Honor Society inducted 48 new Montclair State athletes.
