It’s Open Access Week!

It’s International Open Access Week! Open Access is a global movement to make scholarly research more easily discoverable and accessible by removing subscription barriers (aka “paywalls”) to make content available for free for students and researchers around the world. Open Access to research has countless benefits for those who are both publishing and consuming the content, including:
- Accelerating research by making published books and papers more widely available
- Reducing costs for students by using Open Textbooks
- Making scholarly research available to those who aren’t affiliated with a college or university
- Increasing the impact that authors can have when publishing in their field
- Reducing costs for institutions, whose budgets are often flat while journal prices increase

Open Access Week: What’s Open? Demystifying the Varieties of “Open” (Online)
Co-presented by the Office of Faculty Excellence
Open Access, Open Educational Resources, Open Pedagogy, Open Science, and Open Data promote equity and inclusion in the classroom and broader academy. Removing barriers to access enables more learning, more sharing of knowledge, and even greater learning in turn. Join OFE and University Libraries for this information session on all things Open to learn which methods would benefit you and your students as you think about your courses or your research.

Open Access for Research (Online)
This workshop will cover how to navigate scholarly resources outside of traditional library databases, including:
- Locating and evaluating Open Access resources, including books, journals, and teaching materials
- Copyright and Open Access
- Preprint servers and Institutional Repositories
- Web-based research tools, such as Endnote Click and Unpaywall
