The University Libraries are delighted to offer a unique space on campus designed specifically to be welcoming to neurodivergent individuals. Like the Zen Den in Life Hall, the Sensory Space at Sprague Library is a great place to relax and recharge on the Montclair campus.

Located in Room 030 on the lower level of Sprague Library in the Multimedia area, the Sensory Space is designed to create a safe, comfortable environment for individuals with particular sensory needs. Many thanks to librarian Drew Wallace and Facilities Project Manager Kathryn Lansinger for their work on the design and outfitting.

Within the Sensory Space, the walls are lined with acoustic paneling to reduce ambient noise, and lighting levels can be customized for each user to create the optimal sensory experience.

Privacy Study Chairs: Three acoustically insulated privacy chairs are available for work, study or relaxation. Each chair has an integrated, moveable desk, dedicated work lamp with adjustable brightness, noise-canceling headphones, and multiple outlets for charging personal devices.

Yoga Mats and Cushions: Several yoga mats are available for meditation, yoga, or floor seating. These can be combined with floor cushions to create a comfortable floor seating position.

Noise-canceling Headphones: Headphones can help to block out ambient noise and provide sound isolation from adjoining spaces. In addition to noise cancelation, you can plug them into your personal device with an auxiliary port to listen to music and other media.

Fidget Toys: Several fidget toys are kept in the yoga mat storage cart. These objects can help you relax, focus, and generally provide positive stimulation.
